[Fanfic] Mit solchen Freunden braucht man keine Feinde. [APH]

Title: Mit solchen Freunden braucht man keine Feinde.
Genre: General
Characters: England, Prussia
Rating/Warnings: PG. (Temporary) character death.
Summary: Shortfic. In an unspecified country, during an unspecified war. England and Prussia have stood by each other for longer than they can remember, always watching each other's backs - even as enemies.

***

Arthur still remembered the first time that Gilbert Beilschmidt killed him.

He’d died before, more times than he cared to count, but he always came back. Always with that bone-deep ache and that throbbing headache to let him know he was alive. More times than he could mark on both hands he had bled his life out into the ground, more blood than one body had any right to have, and every time he had come back. He had come to expect it, now, and death held no fear for him anymore.

Dying didn’t frighten him. It was that look in those wine-red eyes as the barrel of the rifle pressed against his throat, that determination, the sheer single minded will to kill him even though they both knew he wouldn’t stay dead that rose the hairs on the back of his neck as he struggled and kicked against the Prussian nation. His fingernails dug into the man’s wrists, skin stretched tight over bony knuckles, nails drawing red lines over his white skin. Eye wide, unseeing, the last remnants of the current battle waged around them as the life was slowly choked out of him, his hands moving to make a vain attempt to push the weapon away from his neck. He made a strangled sound, each breath coming shorter, lungs burning, black edging his vision and all he could see was that face, set with a grim resolve.

He laughed, but the sound didn’t come out how he wanted it to. It was a harsh, gagging noise that was more of an imitation of a laugh and Gilbert’s eyes flickered, narrowed, and he pressed down harder. Arthur’s body spasmed, fingers gripping at his coat now, twisting into the fabric, panic gripping his chest. No, he wouldn’t stay dead, but he was dying, sinking further as the seconds passed. Gilbert snarled, though he barely heard it, and pressed the rifle down harder. A dull crunch and pain exploded in Arthur’s head, blood filling his mouth, then nothing.

A groan spilled past bloodied lips as dawn’s first light blushed the horizon. The battlefield was deserted but for one white-haired man crouched beside one of the dozens of bodies, watching as air shuddered into protesting lungs, muscles twitching. A cough. Arthur rolled over and spat a mouthful of half-clotted blood over the Prussian nation’s shoes.

“Fick!” Gilbert hissed, shifting back. “Wach Auf, faul Pirat.” The butt of his rifle made contact with the English nations head, provoking another groan, the flickering of dulled emerald eyes. His throat felt raw, breathing hurt, voice hoarse as he gathered enough of his mind together to speak.

“I am awake.”

“Get up.” The Prussian man stood, eyes narrowed at the man by his feet, watching as he slowly drew himself up into a sitting position and struggled to his feet, using his own rifle as a prop. He swayed faintly, one hand pressed to his head, an almost amused look in his face as his gaze slid over to Gilbert. Snorting quietly, the silver-haired man crossed his arms and looked away. “Now, get out of here, before I change my mind.”

I really am in love with the notion that nations can just die and come around again; I haven't seen all that much of it, though. D: I myself am terrified of death but love reading about it fff dhurhur

Anyhow, short and sweet--not, er, not really but you know--and I liked it a bunch :Db And since I'm feeling a tad lazy, what does the title translate to?

PrUK Please~♥

Oh my, poor Arthur. I do so love myself PrUK and would be most excited if you did continue writing PrUK. This pairing needs more love.

Oh god I love it too, so much. I have an ongoing RP over 450 pages long that's PrUK but for some reason I struggle to find plotlines for fics.

Pfft! You're not the only one who struggles with fic plotlines when it comes down to it. I also have one going rps of the PrUK variety and let me tell you, I can spew out all kinds of ideas for them, when it comes to typing up something I am like 'Er...I'm so awesome!' :wanders of to cook some monstrosity and comes back after an hour: 'Ugh....why didn't it type itself up?!'

It's so frustrating! DX I can write a USUK fic about ANYTHING but PrUK? It's like some kind of stupid mental block.

Re: PrUK Please~♥

[identity profile] thegreygarden.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Bahahaha, it happens to the best of us. It's because USUK is generic in plotlines and emotions. Meanwhile with Arthur and Gilbert, it's the developing of tolerance with the other, also incorporating their history together(which was quite friendly!).

With Alfred and Arthur, you know Arthur cares about Alfred(though I will admittedly point out that for me, it seems more brotherly than romantic.)and that Alfred, even though he is an ass, cares about Arthur, and they are used to the other's personality(though Alfred still has trouble getting over Arthur's 'imaginary' friends!).

With Gilbert and Arthur, even though they have been shown to be on friendly terms(Gilbert being the kindest about Arthur's cooking, only calling it 'disastrous' or 'disgusting') and also seems to be the least focused on Arthur's eyebrows(something that all the Allies seem to not get over, even the Axis seem to care little about them.), their relationship requires a lot of build up, especially if you're trying to keep them in character.

I always have trouble because I like to keep Arthur in character, though the Arthur I rp tends to be more motherly and magical in terms of characteristics. But he still retains his 'Tsun-dere' nature. Gilbert is a character one can't easily keep in character, especially when he's interacting with other characters and you're not the original creator who made him. While Gilbert seems like a flat character(as all Hetalia characters are, and there is no way you can convince me otherwise, because, let's face it, anything beyond what the creator has shown is fangirl speculation to me.) he's hard to maintain as such, always claiming to be awesome, thinking he is awesome, and thinking West is cute. Then to also portray that being lonely doesn't bother him(but it does when it comes to Austria and Hungary) is also a little taxing.

I don't know, it's difficult with two character who have ungrateful brothers, can't really grasp that they aren't needed, or have trouble with being rejected, and can't express their feelings of care without bumbling when it comes right down to it.

It's also hard to portray the (dead) character of Gilbert Beilschmidt(Weilschmidt) who was a once-Kingdom, who thinks fondly of his Frederick Fritz the Great, and doesn't realize he has a little bird on his head. A person who is not really thought of as a nation, who spends his time recording things and claiming his awesomeness.

It's hard to portray Arthur Kirkland, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. An Empire who once ruled vast parts of Europe and held the world in the palm of his hand. Whose castle was built on a foundation of sand. Who lost everything and had many facets before becoming who he is. The Empire, the punk and the gentleman. He's too stuck up and prideful to be liked by people. He doesn't accept being wrong, and doesn't like being teased about his eyebrows or his magical friends. He's always grouchy, he can be secretly caring, but his attitude and anger get triggered when things don't go his way(a tribute to the fact he was once ruler, and so he can't help it, I suppose).

Thinking about how to portray these characters in a fashion that makes them believable and likeable is, well, rather daunting. Which I guess explains the lack of love.

That and the fact not many people care about it. ;w;

When I RP Arthur I do give him some characteristics that I suppose could be called motherly. He does like to care for people and he does like to be needed and the Prussia that I play with really responds to that while at the same time being completely full of himself. It's a rather funny relationship at times xD

I actually have zero trouble putting them together as a couple. It's just finding situations to put them in that I find hard because they have such a LONG history together, they were practically in each others' pockets from the moment they were 'born'. I love RPing them together and I never find it hard to play the ins and outs of their relationship, but when it comes to fic plots I'm just.. stuck xD There's only so many times you can write them being at war, after all, and I think that any history-based fic with them would be a bit of an undertaking.

I'd need to actually pick a timeframe, first. adfghjkl;

I wouldn't say there's a lack of love for the pairing though. It might not be popular as some but I know several people who like it. Maybe a lot of people just struggle with writing it.

It tends to be more about the shyness of the fans. I've had several people shot down my pairings because of 'XXxUK' or 'XXxPrussia' and it's very hurtful. Especially when you take a character outside of what most fangirls call 'Canon'(because, if we're saying canon, all the nations are having one big orgy. End. of. story.)

I never have issues pairing them either, it's the situation as you point out. I can rp them well. I prefer to rp England, but I can really rp anything.

Now, here's a pair that I liked when the USUK fangirls were are the peak of rabidness. AmericaxN.Italy. Boy was my pair shot down FAST. I was like 'So, does anyone like Feliciano with Alf---' 'Blasphemous! She speaks of other pairs!' and I was like 'Ooookaaaay. Apparently you don't do your history homework. :scuttles off to rp with someone that is open minded:'. That was tragic.

The only reason I openly speak about the pair or PrUK is because I have an amazing friend who plays an Awesome(annoying. Oh GOD ANNOYING.) Gilbert. One day, I shall buff out our rps and post them online. When they're cleaned and made into diamonds.

I don't tend to shoot down pairings. I have ones I don't like, ones I don't care for, but I expect people to show the same courtesy to me that I would show to them and to not rant at me about pairings I'm uncomfortable with. It's nice for you if you like FrUK but I don't so I'd rather not hear about it, for example. I will admit I'm not keen on US/N.Italy but it's more because of a personal reason and if I saw it well played then maybe it would grow on me.

If someone doesn't like a pair that I like then that's fine with me, too (if you're curious there's a link to a post with all my pairings in it up on the top bar there). I don't judge.

I would love so, so much to fic out my RP but I really have NO idea where I'd even start. It's 450 pages on its own so god knows how large it would be when it was fleshed out xDD

You would probably be a wizened old woman when you finish fleshing that puppy out!

I don't shot down pairings, but I tell people how I feel about them. I usually state 'In my opinion' before I say anything though, so people don't think I'm telling them 'THIS IS WHAT IT IS' like others. XD

I had friend I used to rp with that made me dislike mainstream pairs like USUK, GerIta, RussChina, and I was like 'You know what, I'm done! I want this pairing and this pairing! Nothing mainstream damn it!' and so I officially became anti-mainstream for a total of forever, and it was only around her.

XD

I'm willing to try a mainstream pair, but, I can promise you I am not 100% devoted to it. Tragedies, I know.

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha X3

I think that USUK will always be special for me just because it was the pairing that I came into the fandom on. When I started to love it I didn't know whether or not it was mainstream and really, I tend to keep away from the bulk of the 'fandom'. I like some mainstream, some not-so-mainstream, some in between, but god knows I'd never push what I like on anyone else. I can tell them why I like it but I refuse to DEFEND my ships. I used to, but then (like you), I just said I'M DONE. More open minded people plz.

Luckily I've met a lot of wonderful people in this fandom to balance out the few crazies I've come across. My Prussia is also my best friend and I'd be completely lost without her.

I don't think I could say I'm '100%' devoted to any pair, really. But that's all part of having an open mind, I think? If you're so devoted to a ship that you start taking offence over it then there's a problem there.

Wait for it!

[identity profile] thegreygarden.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha! Needed a new thread because our sentences were becoming squished!

Yeah, I toes know where you are coming from. It's fine, I entered into the fandom with GerIta as my pairing. Like I said, I will rp any pairing...well ok I lie. I refuse Russia/Prussia. There is no way I'm doing that in anyway. I'm a petulant child when it comes to that pair for good reasons.

But apart from that, I'll willingly try any pair. I am partial to pairs that are like...crack-tacular. I don't know, something about a pair that no one thinks of seems so fun. XD

Re: Wait for it!

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I.. dislike.. RusPru as well. A lot. Also for reasons that are good, at least to me.

I think that the most crack-tacular pairing I currently RP is Ireland/North Korea. It wasn't something I got into deliberately but rather something that came out of me and a friend randomly throwing muses together xDDD (NK is mine :))

If you'd like to continue this off here you can have one of my IM addresses if you like xD I use msn/skype/gmail/aim. =u=b Or we can just continue here. Either is fine :)

Re: Wait for it!

[identity profile] thegreygarden.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Most crack-tacular pair I have rped was 'N.Italy/Hong Kong' XD

Oh man! I use msn/skype/gmail/ aim too! I'm currently favouring aim more though, so it'd be awesome if we could continue this in aim d=w=b, for the sake of your page not being filled with banter that people would be like 'Are they....for real!?'
