[USxUK] Special Relationship

Title: Special Relationship
Genre: Romance/Angst.
Characters/Pairing: America, England. USUK
Rating/Warnings: U, none.
Summary: Shortfic. Arthur feels smaller than ever, but there's always one person who can cheer him up.

*****

He didn’t know why he came to these things anymore. It was getting harder and harder to show his face in front of other countries as the idiots elected to run his own continued to embarrass him. When he’d slunk into the room a brief hush had fallen, and he’d hurried to his seat without meeting the eyes of anyone. He’d been sat there since, watching Alfred, Yao and Ivan arguing in his peripheral. It was no doubt about the situation in Syria, and Arthur couldn’t really blame Alfred for being angry. The young American nation was deep in irate discussion with Yao, while Ivan stood a little to one side looking eerily serene.

Scotland had been glaring at him since he’d walked in, and he couldn’t bring himself to glare back, instead dropping his head to the table and flipping a file up against it in a vain effort to hide. He shut his eyes and let out a low, frustrated groan, then stood up and hastily shoved his paperwork back into his briefcase. What was the point, he was just humiliating himself, he thought as he grabbed his case and headed for the door. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Alfred look at him, his conversation with Yao faltering, but Arthur was out of the door before he could be followed.

Or so he thought.

“Arthur! Hey!”

He slowed, and came to a stop, and within moments a hand fell on his shoulder, gripping gently. Though he could feel the curious, searching gaze on his face he didn’t look up, and after a moment Alfred let out a soft, slow sigh.

“Arts, man, what’s wrong with you? You never walk out like that.” Arthur had been known to storm out of meetings, to start or be drawn into brawls with Francis or his brothers and be kicked out, but never to simply get up and leave without uttering a word. “It’s not about that thing with the flotilla is it? Man, I told my bosses not to cave to Francis because I knew you’d want in too but i--”

“No, no it isn’t that,” the older man muttered. It was only half a lie – it was partly that, but it was more that it had made him realise how insignificant his presence as a nation was now. It was all well and good to try and act like a superpower, but he knew he wasn’t one any longer. He had realised it, realised that it was time to hand over the reins to larger, more capable nations, to younger ones like this eager man stood beside him, trying to comfort him when he was part of the problem. The politics needed to catch up, that was all, and then he’d just be another island nation clinging to the edge of obscurity. The thought was enough to clamp a tight, uncomfortable vice around his throat, and his shoulders tensed.

Alfred tilted his head to one side, rubbing his thumb across the other’s shoulder. He didn’t understand, Arthur knew that, and how could he understand. He was at the height of his power, a state that Arthur hadn’t seen for decades.

“Arthur, don’t be so difficult, just tell me what’s wrong.”

“Nothing’s wrong,” he said, pushing the heel of his hand up against his eye and shaking his head. “Nothing’s wrong, Alfred, this is just how it should be. You should go back before you’re missed.”

“I…” The American nation faltered, and Arthur didn’t realise how tired he appeared as he glanced up at the man. “I… okay, Arts. Okay, but… wait for me, right? Wait for me, and when I’m done we can go back to my place and I’ll make beans on toast and we can watch whatever stupid film you want. Just wait for me. Please.” He had hold of both of Arthur’s arms now, looking at him earnestly, trying to catch his eyes as Arthur did his best to avoid looking at him. Eventually, Arthur nodded.

“There’s a coffee shop across the road, I’ll wait there.”

“Do you promise?”

“What? I--” He looked up, frowning, and Alfred’s gaze immediately locked to his. There was worry in his eyes, and Arthur felt his cheeks heating. Clearing his throat, he forced a smile and patted Alfred’s arm gently. “I promise. I’ll be there.”

“Okay, just…” Alfred looked around, looked over his shoulder, then peered past Arthur. “Just… don’t forget, Arts… I still need you, even if my bosses don’t. I’ll always need you.” He pressed a quick kiss to the smaller man’s forehead, muttered a quick ‘love you’ then shot off back down the corridor, leaving Arthur feeling dumbfounded. His eyes closed, and a faint smile twitched at his lips. An idiot though he was, Alfred knew just what to say to make him feel better.

Awwww, it's good to have someone to cheer you up when you have a bad day.

Yeah :3

Oh, England... Which brother's glaring at him? I know Wales is pissy over the EU mess, but Scotland is always mad at England. Sorry, that just caught my eye.

I love the dynamic with America and England, Alfred knowing something's wrong despite Arthur's denials, and says just the right thing, even though he might not know he did.

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I did mean it as Scotland but man, it could really be any of them couldn't it? xD

[identity profile] fae-boleyn.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like Wales isn't always mad at him like Scotland is, but considering how things are right now? Yep, could be any of them.

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Scotland doesn't tend to get that mad unless the SNP is in power, which they sadly are at the moment, and Wales just tends to mind its own business :I

I've clarified, anyway :3

[identity profile] fae-boleyn.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I just imagine Scotland as the grouchier one who hassles England more - actually, hassles his whole family - while Wales is laid-back and a bit broody. That's how they seemed to have turned out in my stories, anyway... But then, I'm American and admittedly not up on UK internal politics. (Keeping track of US internal politics is tricky enough; if the states exist Alfred has many headaches, I'm sure.)

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh definitely X3

Wales just kind of puts up with things as far as politics are concerned, but Scotland has been grumbling about independence since the Act of Union in the early 1700s.

[identity profile] fae-boleyn.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
When my Scotland gets drunk, one of three things happens (and sometimes they get combined): he plays his bagpipes horrifically, he practically accosts France in the sort of way France usually accosts people, or he goes to Wales' house and pesters him to rebel against England. France loves the second, Wales ignores the third, and everyone fears the first. Note, when Scotland is sober he plays the bagpipes wonderfully. Wales has a tin whistle that he always plays well - land of song and all.

I don't suppose you have any suggestions about the UK sibs' dynamic? I get the impression you're from somewhere in the UK, so it would be appreciated. :) (Also, I peeked at your Wales FB; who is he in a relationship with? *dying of curiosity*)

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
(Yes I live in England)

Hm, well, when I write them I have Wales as the eldest, Ireland next, then Scotland, then England is the youngest as we know.

Wales is a pretty laid back sort with a very level temper, who treats all his younger brothers like children and has an infinite amount of patience. He'll give England advice but in a gentle kind of way, and England often doesn't realise he's doing it at all. He's also usually the one to sort out all of their magical messes, because he's the only one who isn't completely toasted at least three nights of the week.

Ireland is in two minds about the rest of his siblings. He resents England terribly both for the fights they've had and the fact he has to rely on him for money (we've bailed them out a few times now). He gets along with Scotland best when they're both drunk since they have complaining about England in common.

The relationship between my Scotland and England is the most complex. Before the Wars of Independence they were very close and Scotland would take care of his little brother, he taught him magic and how to speak to fairies, but after the Wars they didn't speak for a very long time and even now they can't stay in a room together for too long without arguing or fighting. What neither of them know is that the other desperately wants that old friendship back. They both love each other very dearly but it's hard to get over the hate.

Also.. I love pairing Scotland with France. Auld Alliance all the way!

And my Wales is with the Prussia of a friend of mine xD Or he was, until that account got deleted in the last FB purging of RP accounts. I haven't been on that profile in a while.

[identity profile] fae-boleyn.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
We seem to agree on some things, though Wales is second-oldest - I have a Cornwall who is the eldest because Ireland walked into my head as a girl and refused to budge, but I wanted England to stay as the youngest of four brothers. North Ireland is younger than him, though he came later on. Wales is definitely the fixer of magical messes. :D

My Scotland resents England for taking him over, but at the same time feels guilty for abandoning his brothers to Rome - since I read that Scotland was pretty much free of Roman influence my idea is that Wales, England, and Cornwall were taken to Rome's house - Wales and Cornwall later escaped - but Scotland hid in his moors and Ireland was safe on her island. She isn't sure how she feels about her family; too much has happened but she just wants their old closeness back.

Wales/Prussia? Funny, I have them in a friends-with-benefits thing in the Victorian Era... My Wales is currently carrying a torch for Austria thanks to an RP of my own.

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Mm, well, that would depend upon when you go from them actually being nations. England didn't become England until long after the Romans had buggered off. I worked my age order out from history and guesswork on the part of historians and they have about 200 years between each of them (ie Scotland is 200 years older than England, Ireland is 200 years older than Scotland, etc).

Why Cornwall, though? It's just a county. o.o

[identity profile] fae-boleyn.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear, some of my timing is fudged terribly - my Ireland and England were christened 'twins' by clueless older brothers because they found them at the same time. Ireland is not really England's twin - she just didn't age as fast as her brothers and was found later (might be why she didn't age), but the idea stuck. Then again, the nations seem to have trouble with this kind of thing. Family ties, gender... It seemed to fit that something would be completely inaccurate but stick.

England was around for Rome mostly for reasons of backstory and my idea that he was born and then Britannia faded. I've toyed with the idea that he is Rome's son with Britannia, but never actually made that part of my headcanon. That would make Greece and Egypt his half-brothers since I am convinced that they're Rome's sons by Ancient Greece and Egypt respectively.

As for Cornwall... Honestly? Because apparently Cornwall is one of the six Celtic Nations and I needed someone for the third older brother because Ireland was just not going to be a guy for me. I probably could have used the Isle of Mann, but I didn't think of that at the time - and then in my head Mann became a girl and one of their cousins anyway.

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I see I see X3 At least you've thought all of this through unlike a lot of people who play with the canon do (since England is never actually said to have a sister, and so forth).

I can give you an exact date for England actually. England became a united nation on July 12, 927AD. :3 Making him a little younger than Norway.

[identity profile] fae-boleyn.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I write AUs and multi-fandom crossovers; I was long prepared to think things through long before I got to Hetalia fandom. :D And I'd heard that Himaruya considered making Ireland a girl at some point - and a crybaby, for some reason - so I figured I had a little justification for her gender.

Wow. Wait... So his technical birthday is the same month as Alfred, Matthew, and Hong Kong! I always put it on St. George's Day, but that's interesting.

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I never really understood why people put it on St George's Day. It seems lazy to me. For a start, St George wasn't even English, he was a Roman. And England isn't the only country/thing he's the patron saint of. He was also the patron saint of the Teutonic Knights, to name one.

[identity profile] fae-boleyn.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
I guess because it's the more well-known date? And also, wasn't the cross on the flag of England called St. George's Cross? I know that's how I worked it out. Although I am seriously reconsidering my use of it - if only because England's birthday also being in July feels like something I could use.

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, our flag is the St George Cross, buuut if you look at Georgia's flag... (the country I mean).

[identity profile] fae-boleyn.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I figured you meant the country - can't recall the state flag offhand but I know it's not that. I honestly didn't think to investigate further; you make a very good point, though. And also, July birthdays... Oh yeah, I can definitely make use of that in something I'm writing. :) So I owe you one.

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
:3 Awesome, you're welcome xD

I'd love to chat with you on IM if you wouldn't mind that? =o

[identity profile] fae-boleyn.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have AIM? It's about the only IM system I use at this point - long story about IRL things behind that. And nope, wouldn't mind at all. :D

Alfred sure knows how to make his dear Arthur feel better :D Sweet story! And I liked how you used recent news for it, nice job :)

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks :D <3

[identity profile] badficwriter.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've been reading your works and I love them all. I can't remember if I've ever commented, but I've been reading all your Hetalia fics, and they're wonderful.

I hope you don't mind if I write something for that Telegraph article! I don't know if I'll post it, but, after a decade of complaints about the US dragging the UK into war, it's ridiculously tsundere. Considering a Iran war would almost certainly be much worse than either Iraq or Afghanistan..:/

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2012-08-03 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't write the article so do go ahead! X3
