(no subject)

At first, I was going to draw Arthur smoking opium. Then, after a little research, I found that opium (contrary to what Victorian literature would have us believe) was far more common in America... owo

ORLY? I was of the same mindframe xD

Awesome drawing, foo. You never cease to amaze me with your awesome skills =D

o.O -stares at pipe- is that what they used to smoke it?

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
An opium pipe xD

There's a lot of different designs.

[identity profile] colourbine.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I see :O The design looks familiar. Did they use a similar type of pipe to smoke tobacco at some point in time?

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's an oriental design.

[identity profile] colourbine.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
oh.....-feels stupid-

[identity profile] phoenixdown7.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I'd always heard that the most popular use of Opium during the Victorian era in England was in "medicines" that babysitters used to "calm children down". Really they just drugged toddlers and put them in a room alone to stare at a wall. Pretty deadly...and stupid. It literally made the kids stupid too...they developed a lot of learning disabilities.

And in the US, doctors prescribed it for "women's problems" aka mentrual cramps. So most Opium addicts were women.

And the British used Opium to single-handedly take down the Chinese government during the Opium wars. A lot of Chinese became addicted all so that the Brits could get some tea and silver. One could argue that this led to the later Boxer Rebellion and the rise of the Communist Party in modern China.

Ah, Opium! hahaha.

This is an awesome picture by the way, I love the open shirt and the relaxed smile. Alfred's so devious!

[identity profile] blood-winged.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I found out about this in my small amount of research. I was refering to pure recreational use - British Victorian literature would have you believe that London was a churning cesspool of opium dens when in fact only a handful of Chinese actually lived in the city and it was barely a problem at all. It was far more commonly used in New York.

Bahaha. Devious Alfred >w<;

[identity profile] phoenixdown7.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Haha...yeah, so hilarious. At least coz he's a nation, he probably can't become an addict. Lucky him!!!!! XDDD
