Sensible politicians, we has them.
Considering the sometimes quite violent insults thrown between these two during the debates, what we have in our government now is similar to if the Democrats and Republicans got together, and over five days worked out/compromised over most of their major differences and began working together.

Cameron could have pushed on and attempted to form a minority Conservative govenment.
The original plan was to do this, and only have Lib Dem backing, but then they decided to go for a full-blown coalition which gives the Lib Dems a lot more power than the Conservatives originally were going to give them. Lib Dem MPs have been placed in positions in the cabinet that senior Conservatives had their eyes on.
Another option, which was only briefly explored, was what was being dubbed the 'rainbow coalition' which would have been a coalition of the Lib Dems, Labour, and several other, smaller parties that they would have needed to make a clear majority. If this had gone through it would have severely weakened our country but thankfully it didn't, because Labour couldn't pull the stick out of their arse for long enough to talk to the Lib Dems like equals (as the Conservatives did).
What we have now, this coalition of Conservatives and the Lib Dems, is the best thing we could have asked for in the circumstances aside from the calling of a second election which would have only pissed everybody off. To have them working together so strongly like this is hopefully something that's going to be the best for our country. It works well on a council level, so let's just see how it plays out in the bigger picture.
