“Fa is thes?”
“Scotland!”
“Englain? Whit th' heel dae ye want?”
Arthur winced at his brother’s strong brogue, yet, he clutched the telephone tightly, his voice strung slightly high when he spoke again.
“Please tell me you felt that.”
There was a pause. Arthur glanced around the room. Nothing too alarming – a couple of picture frames had dropped from the walls, a pen had rolled from the desk... nothing too alarming. Still, it had been enough to shake him from sleep. A disturbing sensation... he felt as if his insides were vibrating. He shuddered. It had been over a year since he had felt anything approaching that magnitude. It was enough to make him nauseous.
“Aye. Aye, Ah felt it. Ur... Ur ye alrecht, Englain?”
The Englishman shut his eyes. Despite all their fights, the years that Scotland had spent picking on him, the sound of his brother’s voice was still soothing. He drew in a breath, held it, then let it out slowly.
“I think so,” he replied eventually.
“'en whit th' heel ur ye callin' me fur? Aam tryin' tae sleep, ye wee dobber, gie back tae scratcher.”
“...What?”
A sigh. Arthur could almost imagine his brother pinching the bridge of his nose.
“... Gang tae sleep, wee brither.”
“Ah...” He dropped back against the pillows and pushed one hand through his hair. “Yes. Good night.”
“Guid nicht, bairn.”
Arthur hung up. He stared at the phone in his hands for a long moment, then all but jumped out of his skin when it began ringing. Pressing one hand to his pounding heart, he answered, closing his eyes and feeling himself sink more comfortably against the mattress. A cup of tea was definitely in order, but first, he had to deal with the panicked Welshman on the other end of the line.
“Lloegr?!”
“Helo, Cymru...”
