Just when you think that something is over, it gets worse. The S key on my laptop has finally packed in, but thankfully I have a USB keyboard from the last time this happened. It feels weird, but it's better than nothing.

On Thursday, after spending an hour on the phone with Laskys I thought I'd finally sorted everything out. Then, on Friday, I find two emails from them which I didn't really understand, and I sent them to my dad so he could have a look. To him, it looked as if they were trying to send me a replacement. I don't want a replacement, I just want a refund so I can not have to deal with them anymore.

I was out, which I'll talk about in a minute, but I was stressing out so dad called them for me. The man he spoke to said that the refunds department was closed, but that there was a refund marked on my account and nothing to be delivered. So I'm thinking this email I got must have just been an error in the system. Dad rang back this morning to get through to the refunds department, where he was told that there WAS a replacement on order, though I have no idea how they were doing that since they were telling me there were none in stock. He cancelled it for me (though I'm surprised they let him do it) and I will hopefully get an email confirming that by tomorrow.

If I don't, dad is gonna call them back for me, and I'm rather glad he's taken over this for me because I am at the point where I just want it to be over with and I would have snapped on the phone with whatever unfortunate soul happened to end up speaking to me. I'm feeling like I'm being messed about, but I don't think it's happening on purpose, it's just a load of miscommunication and I will be writing a strongly worded letter to them when this fiasco is over.

On to the 'out' part. I was at a church in Liverpool on the door for a charity concert by an acapella group. I had no idea what I'd be doing when I got there and didn't know anyone, but it was alright and my night was significantly brightened by winning a prize in the raffle. 31 is now my lucky number. It was nice to get out of the house, I suppose.

Well, I'm back on my old laptop again.

It's been a hell of a pain, this past week, I can tell you that much. First I was getting a laptop, then I wasn't, then I was again, then the laptop I actually, finally got is FAULTY. The screen was doing a funky thing that it shouldn't have been doing. I called Laskys to arrange a replacement at such time as they had it in stock, but this morning the problem was worse, so I thought, feck it, I'll just get my money back. After I spoke to my dad he found out that the people who supply the university he works at had 16 in stock, and he could get one, so we agreed that he could do that, and I called Laskys to tell them I'd decided not to wait, and just wanted my money back instead.

They said that was fine, but I needed to call Samsung to get an RMA (return merchandise authorization), so I called Samsung, and they told me that Laskys needed to call themselves to get it because they didn't give RMA numbers out to customers. Fair enough, I thought, and called Laskys back to tell them this. They didn't understand, since they're not technicians, and can't go through any troubleshooting with me, but they did their best. Around this point I got cut off and had to call back, and was talking to a different person who thankfully understood what was going on. She got in touch with Samsung, and attempted to go through troubleshooting with me, but she didn't really know what she was doing.

Eventually, she told me that she would call Samsung and try to sort something out, and would call me back ASAP or pass on the problem to someone to call me back in the morning. Five minutes later, I got a call back from a man called Mark, who asked me if I'd caught the name of the person I'd spoken to at Samsung. I hadn't. He then asked me for the serial number of the laptop as the person who had written it down before had written it down wrong, and he got back on the phone with Samsung again. In that time, the line went dead, and I got cut off again.

I waited five minutes, then called back, and was on hold for ten minutes before I finally got connected.. thankfully to Mark again, who had said he'd been trying to call me back. He said he had everything he needed to put through the return, and that I'd receive a confirmation email (though I'm not holding much hope out for that). They're sending a courier on Tuesday, so I'll need to be up all day for that, and as soon as they get the laptop back they'll put my refund through. Huff.

I just hope I've been unlucky with this particular one, and that the one dad has got (same model) doesn't have the exact same problem. But, he's going to boot it up at his house to check it, since he'll have it until Boxing Day.

Augh. So, I'm back on my old laptop with the noisy fan, dodgy hard drive and sticky S key, but at least it still works. <3 And it's somewhat comforting because I know all of its little tics and issues, so it's not making me paranoid by doing unexpected things.

So, after a week of being horribly oversensitive to everything my laptop does, mistaking every tiny noise for a My Hard Drive Is Crashing sound and worrying every time it does something that I didn't think I told it to do, it's managed to break anyway.

Oh, I'm still using it, but this morning (and yesterday morning) when I opened the lid after leaving it on overnight the screen, aside from a strip maybe 100px high at the top, was a washed out grey/white colour with a pink pixel line and a green pixel line which slowly filtered down for about another 100px before the screen flicked back to normal. I couldn't screencap it, which leads me to the conclusion that it's a problem with the screen itself, not the software. I've contacted Samsung, who told me that it was certainly not normal behaviour (I had held out some small hope that it might just be because of the lid being shut, more fool me) and that I should look into repair or replacement. I don't really want to faff about with getting it repaired, because it would have to be sent to Samsung and god knows where they'd send it or how long they'd keep it, so I called Laskys.

Since the laptop is still under warranty they've offered me a replacement, which unfortunately won't be for about another month since the laptop is out of stock at the moment. They're going to call me when it's back in and I guess we'll sort it out then. In the meantime I'll be getting a cheapish external hard drive so I don't need to go through all the bother of spending three days transferring everything from my old laptop again. I'll just have to make sure I turn off my laptop at night and don't fall asleep with it turned on - since that's when I tend to wake up all out of it, close the lid and go back to sleep - until I can get it replaced.

Bleh.

Having some weird trouble today.

My sister asked me who voiced Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story, and so I went to check IMDb, which wouldn't load. Wikipedia also wouldn't load. Through checking my bookmarks I found that Hotmail and DeviantART also wouldn't load. I checked on my other browsers, and they still wouldn't work. After I poked around on the internet for a while I found that several sites I was trying to use to check why it might be happening wouldn't load either. However sites like Livejournal, tumblr, Gaia, AOL mail and the webcomics I read would load fine, as would Facebook.

So, I figure, it has to be a virus, though I don't know how I got it since I haven't gone onto any sites that I wouldn't normally. I set Avast up on a boot-time scan (scanning before Windows boots up and before viruses have the chance to activate) and it found two PUPs, which I deleted. When the computer started up again it seemed to have worked - the sites that wouldn't load before would load up... for about five minutes. Wikipedia and DeviantART still won't work (though DeviantART seems to be getting halfway there before it quits) and several of the other wikia sites I use occasionally (Fable, Fallout, Stargate) will refuse to load until repeatedly refreshed, when they will connect and work fine. Hotmail and IMDb will now load perfectly well also.

I've tried a system restore, which did nothing, and have also tried temporarily turning off my firewalls, which also did nothing. As a suggestion off a website I tried flushing my DNS... which also did nothing. I tried logging onto a guest account on my laptop and couldn't access the sites on there either, which makes me think it's a network issue.

I really have no idea of where to go from here and would really appreciate suggestions. I don't think it's a virus, since I've never heard of any virus behaving this way. Also, having just checked, I know that the problem websites WILL load if I use a proxy.

What the heck is even going on.

For some reason, at the moment, when I try to run my webcam on MSN or AIM (not tried any other messenger but I can only assume the same for them), once the link has closed - AIM wouldn't even show my camera - the program locks up, and can only be exited using task manager. However, the process hangs and doesn't respond to the 'end process' option. It's also causing a problem because then, my laptop will hang when trying to shut down (I imagine unable to because of the hanging process).

It's not a big deal, I can live without using my webcam, it's just a bit perplexing. My last updates were for Windows Defender, one on the 21st and one on the 24th, and I'm pretty sure my cam worked before yesterday.

Any clues, anyone?

I haven't slept properly in about a week. For some reason my brain is seeing fit to wake me up at 8.20 AM, after only having been asleep for six hours, and it's done this twice. Perhaps it wouldn't be bothering me so much, but the night before this first rude awakening, I hadn't slept at all aside from a few hours in the afternoon.

I'm wondering if I'm waking up because I'm cold. Perhaps I'll put another layer on my bed tonight and see if it helps at all. At the moment, though, I feel sick. My stomach is wedged somewhere in my throat and making things very uncomfortable for me. Urgh.

In other news, I realised that the memory card in my phone has died on Tuesday. It may have happened before then, but it was some time between when I last used ebuddy, and Tuesday evening. I'm not sure what happened, exactly, but it's gone kaput. I can't even access it using the USB link-up from my phone. My music files have gone, my photos, and I can't use ebuddy anymore, but I can still message, call and use the internet. Strange, huh?

Today, only about an hour ago in fact, my laptop began to make a clicking sound. I knew what was going to happen, but it didn't stop the rush of panic as my laptop bluescreened and rebooted. Thankfully it started up with no problems, and I'm now running a virus scan and such, and have my laptop on a table to stop it overheating. Hopefully it was having it on the sofa that caused the shutdown, and there's nothing seriously wrong with it. When my technology fails, it always seems to happen in a cascade. Sometimes I wish I were more tech savvy so I could work out when something was seriously wrong, but I was in so much shock that I didn't even manage to make a note of the error code. Blargh.

On to more personal things. The lack of sleep - continual lack of sleep - lately is beginning to have adverse effects on my health. I feel sick all the time, everything I eat gives me stomach ache, and my only current pleasures are an RP site I'm on, a lovely Alfred I'm RPing with over email, and my biffle [livejournal.com profile] amael_elen , who I love to pieces. I had to leave class an hour early on Tuesday, and yesterday my professor recommended that I not go in at all, so I stayed home, much to the displeasure of my mother who seems to think I'm doing all of this on purpose.

Yes, because I enjoy waking up at a god-forsaken time after not enough sleep and spending all day feeling like my stomach is turning inside-out and my eyes are drying up in my skull. Isn't that everyone's idea of a good time? God.

On Thursday, I arrived home to find that my laptop was broken. This, on its own, isn't that bad, it's just a bit of a bummer. I spoke to my friend Kit, who is my personal tech support, and he offered to come to my house on Friday night to take a look.

It took him four hours. For a corrupted system file, he had to reformat my entire computer. Thankfully I didn't lose any of my writing, since my hard drive is partitioned, but I'm now running on XP until I go over to Kit's this weekend for some photography and he can set me up with a Windows 7 disk, which I then have to figure out how to run on my own. I'm not sure if I'll be able to do that but hey, how hard can it be? I'll just have to make sure I have everything essential saved to an external hard drive before I install it, and it should be fine.

But as I said, the laptop thing wasn't so bad on its own - what really set me off was that my mobile phone also crashed. For no reason at all. I couldn't do anything with it, wasn't getting network coverage and the charger was no longer recognising my battery as a Sony Ericsson battery. I. Was. Devastated.

You can't even imagine.

So off I go. I turned the desktop on, waiting forever for it to load up because my GOD it is slow (like you wouldn't believe, honestly), and browsed forums for a while before I found something that I could use to fix it. It's fixed now, so no worries, and I have something installed to stop it happening again. The only problem that I ended up with was a complete loss of the lovely themes that I had installed, so I had to make another. I did. I made a very cute USxUK theme using a couple of [livejournal.com profile] technoranma 's pics (I hope that's okay) and one that I had on my phone from God knows when. I put a little US/UK blended flag in my title bars, and it looks awesome. Incidentally, if anyone has a Sony Ericsson phone that they'd like a theme making for, I very much enjoy making them.

I spent a lot of last night weighing the pros and cons of going into university today. The cons won. Turned out that it didn't matter anyway, since I got emailed all the info that I needed about an hour ago. So glad I didn't waste those three hours going there, having the class and coming back... I just wasted them doing nothing instead. =D

I know, I know, I'm terrible.

People who only love me for my writing (yes, I'm looking at you) will be happy to know that chapter fifteen is in the works. Here is a nice preview for you;

“Come on, you sodding Mountie, help me with this.”
“Limey,” a voice piped up behind them, a grin on the American’s face as the two men looked at him.
“Yank,” Arthur shot back.
“Pirate,” Alfred said, moving closer and standing in front of the Englishman, a mischievous glint in his eyes to match the one in the green gaze directed up at him.
“Cowboy.”
“Short-ass.”
“Cack-handed pillock.”
“Scruffy nerf-herder,” Alfred quipped with a snicker, glancing down as Arthur curled his fingers into the top of his pants.
“Columbia,” he purred, tugging the taller man closer.
“Britannia,” was the low voiced response.
“Jones...”
“Kirkland...”
“Guys!” Matthew spluttered, startling the two of them so abruptly that they sprang apart as if electrocuted, both blushing furiously. “Now is not the time!”

Happy now? ^_~

Sigh.

I may not be online tomorrow. Or the day after. Or for some time. My laptop is broken. Not happy.

It's late, and I'm tired, so I'll be brief. I'm only writing this now because I planned to earlier and never got to it.

Labby went home this morning, and I'm still kinda miffed about it. I'd just got used to him being here and now he's gone =/ But ah well. I can only hope he'll be coming back and soon. If not... I should be able to go visit him some time, I hope. Probably not before October though, I need all the money I can get until then. We'll see, I'll look at how much advance tickets are and go from there.

Mother was in a bitchy mood today -.- I mean yeah, I get that she works all day and all that jazz but that doesn't give her the right to kick off at us because there's a couple of plates next to the sink. I simple request to do them would have been enough. Then I get yelled at for looking unhappy, because I wasn't feeling great (not had a decent night's sleep in weeks) and when Amy stuck up for me, she was off again. She then proceeded to ignore the both of us all evening. Can we say 'childish'?
After dinner I went out for a walk. Was nice to be out of the house and by myself but it gave me too much time to think. Only Amy noticed I'd gone out. Oh well. Good job it's pretty safe over there anyway. Worked a little on my fic but I really need to get back into it. Or back into anything.

I feel, sometimes, like my entire life is a badly written film and I'm not even the main character. Nothing I do really impacts on the main story, it doesn't matter, but still I try because I'm hoping one day I'll be noticed. Sometimes I feel I'm the only person who feels like this. It makes me think - what if this entire world is a figment of my imagination? What if the wall behind me doesn't exist when I can't see it? What if I only feel it because I expect to? I shouldn't think about these kinds of things, it makes my head hurt.

Last night I managed to cut myself off from the internet by changing the security settings on my router via the laptop. Bit silly really - I was trying to do something, I didn't realise it would cut me off like that. So, instead of being the day of rest I'd hoped it would be, I ended up fretting until 6am and then waking up at ten to midday and getting straight up to fix it. Luckily I didn't do anything I couldn't fix from the desktop.

My God, that desktop. It's so slow I want to stab it.
