Victorian Depression AU – Profiles

Arthur Kirkland, 26, an intelligent and ruthless businessman with little time for anyone but himself. At a young age he inherited his father’s lucrative business, and maintained it well, though recent hard times have made it more and more difficult to stay in the black. On the outside he projects an air of self-important superiority, something which has made him unpopular with those who would be in a position to help him, but on the inside… who knows? What Kirkland is like in the privacy of his own company is something that nobody could say, though it does not stop people from guessing.

Blonde, green-eyed and pale, he would be handsome, were it not for the slight sneer that perpetually curls his lip. Yet, he is a man filled with contradictions. He would not be above knocking a starving orphan aside to take the last piece of fruit from a market stall, only to give it away to the next beggar who turned a hand to him. In a style of which Scrooge himself would be proud, he will never give money to the poor, but he is not above opening his doors for a night or two to a young pregnant woman or group of ragged urchins.

It could not be said that he has a warm heart, but he is certainly not made of stone, and any of the blessed few who have been on the receiving end of his kindness are quick to defend him. The defence of the homeless and the destitute, however, is worth nothing to those who speak ill of him behind his back.

Alfred F. Jones, 22. Young and brash, he made his way over to England from the New World seeking refuge from the bitter economic climate. However, he found little respite and now, with no way to return home, he spends his days searching for odd jobs in the city of London. Sometimes he is lucky, with enough coin by nightfall to find a safe place to sleep. Other nights, he is not so lucky, and the bitter English winter can be a cruel mistress.

Jones loves to play the hero, swooping in to save the persecuted from their tormentors. This, amongst other things, is often more than enough to get him into trouble with the authorities, with the unfortunate side-effect being that they will not come to his rescue should he need it. He has had several short-term jobs since his arrival in England, but has found himself unable to hold any of them down either due to the economic issues or simple personality clashes.

Lately, Alfred has found himself falling victim to a persistent cough, no doubt due to the damp conditions which he finds himself in almost every night, and poor health can be a man’s worst enemy.

Francis Bonnefoy, 29, a suave sophisticate and Arthur Kirkland’s long-time rival. The two of them have joined together on a small number of ventures over the course of their acquaintance, but they most often find themselves on opposite sides, and have come to blows several times. It is hard for both of them to remember now what began their rivalry, but it has been a long one dating from before they gained control of their respective businesses. As boys, they attended the same school and although they were friends in the beginning, their camaraderie was brief and they soon began arguing. At a time when Kirkland’s business was at the peak of its power he held considerable shares in Francis’ company, but those days are long over and it is often said that the two merely fight for the sake of fighting.

While Arthur’s mistrustful and often cold nature has alienated him from many, Francis in contrast is a charming sweet-talker, able to work his way out of trouble with only a smile. He spends money freely on luxuries and draws men and women alike to him like moths to a flame. Arthur’s elder brother Tavish has been known to have dealings with him in efforts to undermine his brother, resenting that the business was left to Arthur instead of him. Recently, however, such dealings have been discouraged by Francis himself as he and Arthur’s stocks are so heavily dependent upon each other that the collapse of one would leave the other struggling.

Rhys Lewis, 17, Arthur Kirkland’s assistant, a kind and patient young man who stays in his job despite poor pay and poorer treatment. He is given little freedom in the workplace and often goes unnoticed by those who visit his master, though a moment spent talking to him would reveal and intelligent and thoughtful personality. When asked why he continues to work for such a tyrant, as Arthur is often called, Rhys will simply smile and shrug, and utter some excuse or another about knowing he’s lucky to have the work, when in truth, he knows that there is far more to the man than the harsh exterior that he projects.

Rhys is quiet and unassuming, rarely speaking up to voice his opinion though when he does he can be rather vocal and has saved Arthur from a couple of bad decisions in the past. He often works late, though he would never let on that the organisation of the books and accounts rests completely on him, respecting his employer far too much to let it be known how scatterbrained he really is.

Toris Lorinaitis, 22, a good friend of Alfred's. Once a successful and sought-after assassin, he has found that work has been lacking in recent times and now relies on the energetic American much more than he would like.

Antonio Fernandez Carriedo, 28, once a highly successful businessman, until his company was undermined and almost taken over by Arthur. He is a good-natured man who holds no ill-will towards Arthur yet often finds himself pulled into the schemes of those who would seek to topple the rough-tempered blonde from his pedestal.

Arthur and Antonio met when the former was first beginning the expansion of his business. The younger man, seeing an opportunity, almost took over Antonio's company before Antonio managed to break free of his influence with help from the man's rival Francis Bonnefoy.

Matthew Williams, Alfred’s little brother, left behind when he made the journey to England.

Ivan Braginski, head of the police force, known for being slightly unhinged. He cares very little for people like Alfred.

Peter Kirkland, 15, Arthur’s younger brother, a constant pest who always seems to be under his feet.

Tavish Kirkland, 32, Arthur's older brother.

Caoimhe Kirkland, 24, Arthur's younger sister.
