There were many things that Arthur loved about Alfred.
He loved Alfred’s wild, carefree grin.
He loved the way he would wrap his arms around him when he slept.
He loved the soft, genuine laugh that Alfred would let out when he found something funny.
He loved Alfred’s energy, his enthusiasm, and the ways that he could make anything seem possible.
He loved how he always smelled of coffee.
He loved how the younger man would hoard things, like memories, and then deny it while he smiled and thought of the toy soldiers hidden in his storage room.
He loved how Alfred could make him feel stronger, just by holding his hand.
… He loved holding Alfred’s hand.
He loved how his lover’s face would light up as he sang his anthem, the pride that glowed there, and the happiness in his eyes when Arthur sang it too.
He loved Alfred’s hair, his eyes, the way everything about him was so unreal, yet so fragile.
… He loved it when Alfred let him see how breakable he really was.
He loved the way that Alfred would wear certain clothes, just to make sure that Arthur’s eyes stayed on him.
He loved how Alfred would make an effort, every year, to remember his brother’s birthday even when no one else did.
He loved watching Alfred work, that faint line of concentration that appeared between his eyebrows, only to suddenly disappear when he realised he was being observed.
He loved that he could still teach Alfred new things, and still surprise him.
He loved how young Alfred made him feel.
… He loved telling Alfred about his history, and how the young man would listen with rapt attention while he was told about Vikings and pirates.
He loved how excited Alfred would get over action movies.
He loved how Alfred would drop everything to just hold him, to bury those lightly calloused fingers into his hair and murmur to him softly that he loved him, really loved him.
He loved knowing that Alfred would never hurt him. Never again.
He loved the way the American made him feel safe.
He loved knowing that Alfred loved him.
He loved being able to love Alfred.
