Pick a character and I will give and explain the top three ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them.
I reserve the right to say "I have no idea," or "I don't write them."
I see you all there in my watchers list, all 130-odd of you. There is no excuse for no replies :|

Date: 2011-03-02 03:43 pm (UTC)1. To start with, England is OLD. He is not some whiny pissant of a 20-something year old, he's a nation and has over 1000 years on him. Thus, I try to keep in mind the enormous amount of history that the country has when I write him, rather than simply sticking to the occasionally 2D personality he's given by the anime.
2. This is particularly important when writing confrontations and when he's falling into bed with people all over the place - British. Sodding. Empire. I never understand the people who make him a whiny and subby submissive because come on guys, this man commanded the largest empire that the world has ever seen.
3. The way he speaks. This has been something that has come into it more recently as I've been roleplaying and writing him more and more, but England as a country has a very wide variety of dialectal words and phrases which are seen to be quintesentially 'British', so things like 'sod off' and 'bloody hell' are almost required for his vocabulary. Not to mention that British cursing is just plain hilarious :D

Date: 2011-03-02 09:37 pm (UTC)Hmm, Prussia~
1. He's awesome. Of course. I always have to keep in mind how self-assured he is of said awesomeness and how much it annoys the living hell out of everyone else.
2. At the same time however I always keep in mind that he isn't quite so simple as he seems to like to make himself out to be - comics have shown that while he professes to love being alone he actually doesn't seem to enjoy it all that much. I think he's actually more sensitive than he lets on. Unfortunately the way he's led his life means that in the present day very few people can actually stand his company for too long.
3. As with England, Prussia has a history. It's actually a rather bloody one when you get into it and I don't see there being any way that he could have come out of it entirely unscathed. Whether they be physical, mental, or both, he'd not have got out of that kind of history without a few scars.

Date: 2011-03-03 06:29 pm (UTC)1. He's young, and let's face it there's a lot about being a nation that he missed out on when you put him up against the older European and Asian nations. It's a given that he's going to be self-conscious about his lack of history compared to others (in fact I'm not sure but I think that's actually canon).
2. He's THE HERO! Whether or not his actions have the intended result the things that he does, from his point of view at least, are always for the best. Unfortunately this does end up with his looking very overbearing, but I'm pretty damn sure he's not as stupid as he makes himself out to be. He spreads himself thinly trying to step in and be the hero for everyone and it does impact upon him.
3. Alfred does care about people. He can read atmosphere, he just choses to ignore it. Whenever I write him, I try to keep it in mind though it can be difficult to balance how much he shows his feelings with how much he seems to ignore those of others.

Date: 2011-03-03 08:17 pm (UTC)1. The culture. Pretty much every time I think of writing Japan involves a load of research (which is probably why I don't do it often!) because of how much Japanese culture is different to Western.
2. Japan was not always the peaceful nation that he is now - even their actions during WW2 could be marked as 'peaceful' compared to the past conflicts that they've been involved in and the things that the country has done. Yes, it's fun to write him being moe and adorable but he definitely has a darker side.
3. CATS. I don't know why, but things I write with Japan tend to end up involving cats. XD

Date: 2011-03-03 10:45 pm (UTC)2. Spain. His relationship with Spain is weird and though I haven't entirely got it straight in my mind, but I think it impacts him a lot.
3. He isn't a complete coward. Romano has had his moments of bravery, and he's far more intelligent (or at least not as naive) as his brother. Still, he's a bit of a coward and writing him otherwise is really just wishful thinking XP

Date: 2011-03-03 11:13 pm (UTC)1. Canada is one of what I call the 'secret badasses' of the world. Yes he's never really made a name for himself in war but that doesn't mean he wasn't there! He's definitely a hero, just a quiet one. Like a ninja.
2. He's bi-lingual. Generally I have Canada speak French when he's upset, or when he doesn't want someone (usually America) to understand what he's saying.
3. While he's rather used to being ignored/invisible/mistaken for his brother he is most definitely happy when someone can tell them apart. Personally I don't see how it's hard, but whatevs. XP Anyone who CAN tell them apart will no doubt be treated to his cooking... which is amazing. He was half brought up by France, after all.
