It was only when Alfred had poked him for the third time that Arthur finally turned his gaze to the younger nation with deliberate slowness and gave him a flat, ‘what the sodding hell do you want’ look.
“I’m bored, Artie,” the younger man said. Arthur sighed softly, shifting, and with an exaggerated groan, Alfred slid down and laid his head in the Englishman’s lap. Arthur tried to look irritated, but with those big blue eyes looking up at him he failed spectacularly and smiled instead, running one hand over Alfred’s hair and picking up the television remote with the other. One finger curled around the American’s cowlick and he tugged very gently, hearing the responding squeak followed by an embarrassed grumble that was only half meant. Alfred raised one hand as if to stop him, but instead lightly stroked his fingers over the back of Arthur’s, his gaze on the television as the older man flicked through the channels. When he settled on one, Alfred sat up, and Arthur leaned against him, making a happy sound as one arm was wrapped around him and he was pulled close to the American’s body.
“What’s this?” Alfred asked, a tiny frown on his face.
“A Christmas Carol,” Arthur told him. Alfred was quiet for a while, then he tightened his grip on the Englishman and nuzzled against the top of his head. Arthur looked so pretty with the firelight dancing on his pale skin, he thought, watching the shadows flickering over his lover’s face. He smiled, and held the man to him, squeezing him almost possessively.
“Arth-”
“Just be quiet and watch the film,” the older man murmured, though there was an edge to his voice that said very clearly ‘this is one of my favourite films so shut up and enjoy it or I will hurt you’. The hint was received loud and clear, and Alfred sank down a little, making himself more comfortable and happy enough to cuddle Arthur, even if the film was a bit rubbish.
“He kinda reminds me of you,” Alfred said after a while, his voice quiet so as not to disturb Arthur too much.
“Hm?”
“Y’know, he’s all grumpy and stuff, and so are you.” His tone was softly teasing, and he knew he hadn’t been taken seriously when Arthur let out a stifled little laugh and muttered under his breath.
“Humbug,” he said. Alfred laughed, and hugged him, and then his eyes went wide and he stared at the screen.
“Arthur, this is creepy.”
Arthur looked at the screen, then at Alfred, then back to the television. He smiled and moved to press a kiss to the American’s cheek. Alfred would never admit to anyone else that even something as tame as ‘Casper’ would give him the creeps, and it had taken some time before he would confess such a thing to Arthur, but now, at least when they were alone, he would always say when something was scaring him. As much as Arthur loved hugging Alfred, it was a little awkward when the man was wrapped around him and shivering all over because of a nightmare that ghosts were coming after him.
“It’s only the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.” He stroked Alfred’s hair soothingly. “It’s not scary.” Alfred pouted at him, but refused to look at the television again until the scene was over.
“Hey, Artie,” he muttered then, hesitating before he went on. “That kid, Tiny Tim, he won’t really die, right?”
“Just watch.”
Tiny Tim, of course, did not die, and Arthur felt Alfred’s silent sigh of relief as the narrator said it. A tiny smile curved his lips though he quickly banished it as Alfred moved to look at him. A quick kiss was planted on his lips as Alfred reached over him to grab the remote, changing the channel just in time for an explosion and the unmistakeable face of Bruce Willis.
“Awesome!” Alfred enthused, cuddling Arthur happily. “I love Die Hard.”
