nasty_show. She wanted more zookeeper AU, so here it is!
The sole reason he hadn’t fired his ‘assistant’ yet was that he made good eye candy about the place, and when you were surrounded by baboons all day, being noisy and generally making a mess (and that was just the customers, the primates were another story) you needed something good to look at just to provide a break in the routine. At the moment, however, the boy was being more irritating than anything else, peering into the tiger enclosure and poking one finger through the fencing. Though the large cats were a fair distance away, Arthur had seen how fast they could move, and he didn’t fancy Alfred’s chances if one of them decided that it wanted a piece of him.
“Don’t be such a buzz-kill, dude,” Alfred replied, making a few cooing sounds into the enclosure as the tigers sunned themselves. Rolling his eyes, Arthur dumped a pile of straw into his wheelbarrow and grabbed the handles, lifting it and moving to the door.
“This is important. I need you to stand by the door here ready to open it if they start stalking me.” The way that Alfred confidently smacked the side of his hand against his forehead in some kind of mock salute did nothing to give Arthur any faith in his abilities. His supervisor had told him to give the boy a chance. Nothing, Arthur thought, to do with the fact that this layabout was his nephew.
The tigers didn’t pay any attention to him as he slipped into the enclosure, and Alfred shot him a thumbs-up that he supposed was supposed to be an encouragement. Despite having done this dozens of times it still made him anxious. Something about two large felines with claws that could rip muscle from bone in one swipe made his legs wobble, but to hell if he was going to let on that he couldn’t do his job properly. The last thing he needed to do was give the idiots in the break room more ammunition to poke fun at him with. They never did it to his face but he knew the kinds of things that went on when he wasn’t there.
It was routine, and he made his way a short distance from the gate, spreading the straw out over the platform that the tigers liked to lie on from time to time. He could feel them watching him, two pairs of amber eyes tracking his every movement. They had been hand-reared from birth, both of them, and had never attacked him before, but the hairs on the back of his neck were standing on end.
“-thur. Arthur!” He heard his name being hissed urgently, and glanced over his shoulder, finding Alfred waving a hand at him and pointing. At the other side of the enclosure the tigers were beginning to show a disturbing amount of interest in him. He couldn’t rush. Running would only make them chase him, so with shivers running up and down his spine he pretended not to notice, slowly backing up towards the door and watching them out of the corner of his eye. They were stalking him, he could see it, circling and trying to cut him off from the door.
A hand grabbed his arm and pulled him back, forcing him to leave the wheelbarrow behind as he was dragged out of the enclosure. The door was slammed shut and a moment later one of the large cats had pounced on the barrow, bending the thin metal with its weight. Alfred had hold of him, hugging him tight against his chest and Arthur could feel his heart pounding, though he wasn’t sure that it was entirely because of the large tiger now prowling close to the enclosure door.
“You’re always telling me to pay attention, dude!” Alfred said, letting go of him and turning him around. “You’re setting a bad example letting those cats sneak up on you like that.” The younger man blinked, and Arthur stared at him, then Alfred flashed a charming grin and patted his supervisor’s shoulder, letting out a perky little giggle. “Why are you all red?”
“I am not-! Ugh.” Turning away, Arthur rubbed his face and let out a slow, steadying breath. Why was he red? What a stupid question. He was red because he was nervous after just having escaped near-mauling by a tiger, it had nothing at all to do with the fact that he hadn’t had sex in three years and his young trainee was actually quite attractive and smelled rather good…
“Hey, Arthur, do you want to go get some coffee or something?”
“Huh?”
“You know. Coffee. After work. Well. We can get some now if you like but I meant… after… work. Yeah. Is it weird that I’m asking you out for coffee? Uh!” Alfred started, letting out a nervy little laugh. “Not that I’m asking you ‘out’ or… You know!”
“Stop talking, you’re going to hurt yourself. Or I’ll hurt you.”
“Rather you than the tiger,” the younger man retorted, poking his tongue out and dancing out of the way of the half-hearted swipe that Arthur sent in his direction. “So, you wanna? Come out for coffee I mean.”
“Uhm… Sure.”
“Yeah?”
“I said yes, didn’t I?!”

It will be marvelously hilarious.
