Summary: The year is 2438. A little over one hundred years ago, Russia finally cracked and nuclear warheads were sent flying to every corner of the world. No one had time to react. Some countries were wounded, some lost forever. The smaller nations suffered the most. Russia disappeared, never to be heard of again. Finally, the world is beginning to piece itself back together, and there is movement in the irradiated lands of Old Russia. Something is stirring, and only the rag-tag group of remaining nations can discover what it is. Ivan Braginski, or something far worse...

‘It’s been two hundred years since that day.’
Arthur put his pen down and looked out of the window. The sun was shining on the street below and people were going about their business, the noise from the comings and goings filtering up into the room where the Englishman sat. He smiled, picking the pen up again.
‘We had underestimated the humans. Not long after we returned from Russia, a small group of them arrived on our doorstep. They asked us if we were gods. We told them the truth, and they accepted us so happily that we wondered why we hadn’t told them sooner. Without Ivan’s oppressive influence, the people flourished. Soon, it became safe for us to return to our respective countries, but it was some time before all of us felt comfortable in doing so. Canada had been our home for so long, but we had to remember that it wasn’t our nation. Matthew was sad to see us all go but since then he and Gilbert have been doing well, and Matthew seems to have completely shed his 'invisibility effect'. We all listen to him now.
Toris’ return had been the precursor for so many good things. When we had the resources, we made our way back to Europe, and we found others.
Roderich, confused and frightened, was found in the burned-out shell of his old house. Lovino had been taken in by the Italians still left in southern Italy. My dear Adel was discovered by Francis, wandering the border between his country and hers. Over time, we found others. Hungary, Denmark, Romania, Slovakia, and slowly, the world as we had known it was drawn back together.
Although Francis was content for some time with the relationship between he and Vash, he soon fell back to his old ways. Vash finally admitted his feelings for Roderich, and Francis returned to pursuing every pretty face that passed by. It was definitely much more normal.
Yao has been writing weekly. The Asian nations have come on in leaps and bounds and Kiku has never been better. He is always telling us that he is going to visit but as of yet it hasn't happened - he's simply been far too busy. The African nations too are well on the road to recovery, and with the new world 'order', they are never short of the things that they need to make the technological progressions that they had not been able to achieve before. I managed to get to Australia for the first time in over three hundred years not long ago, and although it's been difficult for them, Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania are pushing onwards.
I discovered my brothers living as wild children, but they remembered me, and for once it was I who was the older brother. Scotland still tries to order me around, but it is rather ineffectual when he is only up to my waist. Although other nations had returned to their native soil, I had no plans to. While I kept my land back home I stayed with Alfred for the most part, and I know that he is happy with the arrangement.
Those countries on the border of Russia took the longest to return, yet they did. Raivis and Eduard are back with us, living with Toris until they are strong enough to strike out on their own. Ukraine, too, has made a full recovery. Peter, after some bothering of the rest of us, was given the old Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea, finally becoming a fully-fledged nation. He prospered, with close friendships with both the Baltic and Nordic nations. Óskar is closer to his brothers now, and although his economy is still terrible, he's keeping his chin up and asking for help where he needs it.
Peter is the same height as me, now.
As for Ivan, well-‘
“Arthur, is this right?”
A sheet of paper was handed to him, and he looked down at the neat lines of carefully practiced Latin characters, nodding in approval before glancing up. Eager violet eyes framed by light, beige-coloured hair met his, and Arthur smiled, standing and handing the paper back. The boy had been living with he and Alfred for thirty years, and he was already up to Arthur’s shoulder. He was a sweet child, unfailingly kind and good-tempered and always willing to lend a hand with physical strength that already rivalled Alfred’s.
“That’s wonderful, Ivan,” Arthur replied, ruffling the boy’s hair. “You’re learning quickly.”
“Does that mean I can come with you?” He had been asking if he could accompany Arthur and Alfred on their visit to Europe for weeks, and Arthur had told him that if he learned his letters, he would be able to go along. The Englishman paused, and took in the sight before him. Ivan Braginski, once the most feared nation in the world, was standing in front of him with his hands clasped, rocking back and forth on his heels, waiting with baited breath for Arthur’s permission.
“... I did promise, didn’t I?”
“Hurrah!” Ivan cheered, hopped up to give Arthur a hug, then ran from the room to pack. Arthur quirked one eyebrow in amusement.
‘Unlike the others, Ivan never regained his memory. It is for the best, I think. He doesn’t need to remember the terrible things from his past and it helps us all to forget. He is still the largest nation in the world, but so much of the land is still uninhabitable, and he is often made sick by the amounts of radiation still polluting his soil. When we found him he was barely alive, and perhaps we would not have if he hadn’t strayed over into Alaska, aggravating the scar on Alfred’s shoulder that still marks the damage caused. Matthew fetched him for us, and brought him down to Jamestown, where he has lived with us ever since. We were wary of him at first, but over time we came to realise that he no longer posed any threat, and he has since been reunited with his sisters and has, after some years of tense relations, formed friendships with the Baltics.’
A carriage drew up outside and Arthur hurried to the window, leaning out. The way that they used technology had changed, and now they worked in a world enamoured with the old styles, but new equipment. Cars were rarely used except for over long distances, and air travel had been revolutionised. Some things had been rediscovered, many things improved upon, and now, they shared knowledge freely. Organisations like the EU no longer existed, though the United Nations had been reformed under a different banner and the truth – this time, they truly were united. What had happened would never be forgotten, and they no longer played the old game of threatening military action at each perceived wrongdoing. Differences were solved with words, over a drink or two, and although the humans sometimes fought, as humans will, the unity between the nations remained strong. For once, it was not the humans influencing the actions of the countries, but the other way around and there was, although they were hesitant to use the word, peace.
“Alfred, the coach is here!” Arthur called, leaving the room and heading upstairs, taking the steps two at a time. “Come on, sleepy-head!”
He entered their bedroom and found Alfred sound asleep, curled up with one hand curled near his cheek. The American was not asleep for long, however, as his arms were suddenly full of giddy Englishman and the two of them were laughing, sharing a warm kiss before Arthur drew back and smiled brightly.
“The coach is here, time to go,” he said, and Alfred nodded.
“Good stuff, is Ivan coming?”
“Yes, he finished his work.”
“Awesome. He’s a good kid, that one.”
“Come on, it’s going to go without us! We’ll miss the plane, hurry uuuup!” Ivan was shouting from the bottom of the stairs. The two men grinned at each other, and got up, grabbing their cases and heading down to the front door.
‘Perhaps it wasn’t how we would have wanted it to come about, but finally we had the kind of world that we had only dreamed of.’
The boy helped them with their bags, carrying all three heavy cases down the garden path to the gate as if they were pillows. Arthur looked up at Alfred and smiled, and Alfred pushed his glasses further up the bridge of his nose, leaning down to kiss Arthur’s temple.
‘At the end of all things, we have a second chance, and we are going to do it right this time around.’

And that's it. It's over.
Now what do I do?

Date: 2010-03-14 10:46 am (UTC)Chibi nations everywhere. <3 Hahaha. Too cute. I thought Peter would have new friends, but he grew up too. That was a nice thought to add in, even if it's strange thinking about an older Sealand. "Stupid jerk England. Sealand is a great nation now. XP." I can still see him doing something like that. lol
The new Russia is simply adorable. He reminds me of an excited puppy...kind of like America at times, especially with his eager atttude. He just seems so lovable. lol Poor thing is still suffering side affects of the radiation though. D8
A potential suggestion for you? I think it would be interesting if you decided to continue developing this universe. Not necessarily as another long chaptered fic, but I think there's a potential for smaller oneshots. You could show the redevlopment of he relationships between the older surviving nations and the reborn nations. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing how Arthur and Alfred and the rest of the world dealt with the reappearance of Russia. Considering the old Russia's insanity I'm sure several of the others would have been unhappy/wary with his reappearance, innocent or not. Then there's his upbringing. America, England, Russia in one house. There's a definite potential for drama, cuteness, and comedy. Mother!England anyone? lol "Arthur, Ivan's already sick enough from the radiation in his land. I don't think he needs your radioactive cooking on top of that."
Thank you for sharing such a great fanfic. It's been fun stalking your journal and checking my messages for updates. lol Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Date: 2010-03-14 04:13 pm (UTC)YES, neo-steampunk is precisely what I had in mind. You're good at this ¬¬
Aah, Sealand. People love Sealand. That's why I didn't kill him off in the first place >w<; I thought it would be nice for him to finally get what he wanted.
I had it in mind from the start to have Ivan be that way. I figured, with Alfred's influence, he'd probably grow up that way xD
And you know, I hadn't thought of spin-offs, but it's a good idea. So much potential! o_o;
Thanks very much for reading~ <3

Date: 2010-03-15 07:48 am (UTC)Oh God. Alfred as Russia's main influence...I truly don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Poor Russia is going to have more health issues if he picks up Alfred's appetite. XP I can just see England watching in complete horror as the other two inhale hamburgers and other new wave fast foods.
Russia & America: Mumble. Mumble. Slurp. Mumble. Chomp. Gulp. Yum! 8D
England: D8 STOP TALKING WITH YOUR MOUTHS FULL!!! D8< *Tsundere Rage*

Date: 2010-03-15 07:52 am (UTC)Say, how does this sound..?
“Why don’t the other nations like me?”
Alfred blinked, looking up. He frowned, and glanced over at Arthur, who twisted his lips in a worried expression and stood up, moving over to where Ivan sat. The Englishman perched beside the boy and Alfred leaned forwards, resting his chin on one hand.
“What do you mean? Lots of them like you.”
“Switzerland doesn’t...”
“Oh, Ivan...” Alfred chuckled and settled back in his chair, an amused smile on his face. “Vash doesn’t like anybody. You’re not worried about that, are you?”
;D

Date: 2010-03-14 11:28 am (UTC)Oh my god Alfred you're so dead! xDD
I would like to see how the world react to the new Ivan too. And even though you stated that Ivan doesn't need to know his past in this fic, he's bound to know about it in the future. Since, it's obvious that these kind of things are written down in the history books *-*

Date: 2010-03-15 08:08 am (UTC)Wow. Do I spy with my little eye a tiny plot bunny running by? <3
Russia finding out would be so painful. In my mind I can see one of the other nations unintentionally bringing up the old Russia's insanity, leaving the new one utterly baffled. Upon doing some research he begins to remember tidbits of his past. He'd have to deal with guilt for actions that he may not understand or recognize as his own since he's changed so drastically, and has pretty much become a new person. The following angst and drama would be huge.

Thank YOU for writing and posting this. ♥

Date: 2010-03-14 03:15 pm (UTC)First of all, I love the way you characterised them all. Matthew finally proving that he's the second largest land mass, Arthur actually being competent with his magic, the dark power of Britannia Angel... It was absolutely beautiful- and I also like the way you brought everyone back to life. I really did believe, from the beginning, that they weren't truly dead, but the way you handled this still surprised me somehow.
Secondly, I love the interactions between the characters. There are so many hints at possible buildings of deeper relationships, whether they're based on love or friendship or something else. And of course, I'm a Canada/Belarus fan, so that helped. XD
Thirdly, I truly adored little Russia. It was, for me, like a peek at how he could have been, had he not had such a sad childhood. I admit, I was scared at first that you were going to portray him simply as insane and evil, but when I saw this I was immensely pleased. It's really difficult, sometimes, to remember that there's more to Ivan than his history- that he's really "the world's most dangerous idealist", as some author said.
Fourth- speaking of idealism, I love how everyone became one because of Russia. For me that just concluded the whole Russia thing in Hetalia for me. It painted a picture where somehow, Russia was able to make the world a better place just how he always wanted, even though the means by which he did it weren't desirable at all.
There are so many more points I'd bring up but gack, this comment would just be way too long. XD ILU so much for writing such a great fic.
(no subject)
Date: 2010-03-14 04:34 pm (UTC)I've always had it in my headcanon that Matt, in terms of sheer physical strength, is as strong if not stronger than his brother, he just doesn't show it off like Alfred does. He also secretly idolises Alfred's 'heroism', and this was his chance to shine~
Arthur as a competent magic user definitely has an appeal, doesn't it? ^^;
Hehe. I'm not sure there'd be any Canada/Belarus in THIS timeline, but they're definitely firm friends <3 Which is kind of nice for Natalia - she was kind of an outcast before, wasn't she.
I wanted to make Ivan able to have a new life. I didn't want to leave him dead but I didn't want history to repeat itself, and complete memory loss because of the way he died was a perfect get out of jail free ;D Sometimes, in the comics, he can be incredibly sweet (as in, when he let Toris sleep on his shoulder) and I wanted to bring that out in him <3
Yep, you're not the first person to mention that and I have to say I didn't realise it at first, but you're right. Even though it probably wasn't what he had in mind, everyone became one because of him.
Also, comment as much as you like! I love the input >w<; Thanks for reading =)

Oh and Ivan at the end! That was adorable, he's so cute when he's not being an absolute psycho (often even then :o )
Anyway, thanks for this, it was incredible.
Finally (just because I'm saying this to everyone) THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP ENDED it's official. Stupid government not caring about the fantasies of an English fangirl *shakefist*
:) I have nothing but LOVE <3 that is all that remains . . .
Re: chaou
Date: 2010-03-29 10:21 pm (UTC)The Special Relationship will never end! Britain has always been the USA's closest ally and will continue to be through the cultural and military ties that have bound us together for centuries.
(And, of course, as long as there are fangirls like us)
