“Life's greatest happiness is to be convinced we are loved.”
- Victor Hugo

Any and all grace and poise that Arthur managed to retain while awake was completely lost when he was sleeping, Alfred noticed. It was rare, when they were together, that the American would wake up before his lover but when he did it was almost guaranteed that the smaller man would be tangled up in a position that left Alfred wondering just how he managed to remain asleep.

With the hazy London morning light filtering in through a gap in the curtains, Alfred watched Arthur breathing, his face half turned into the soft pillow and tucked down towards his chest, one arm hanging down behind the head of the bed. The other, though the American couldn’t say for certain, looked to be wrapped somewhere around his midriff, and Alfred wasn’t sure but it seemed that the man’s hips were turned in the most awkward way imaginable. One leg was sticking out from beneath the sheets, but Alfred had learned a long time ago to never, ever touch Arthur’s feet while he was sleeping – the last time had resulted in his having to send Texas off for a week to be mended after being kicked in the face, and he didn’t much fancy spending another seven days fervently denying his hyperopia while bumping into things around the house.

Fumbling behind him for his glasses, Alfred pushed them on and blinked a few times, wrinkling his nose to push them further up the bridge before he leaned forwards and planted a warm kiss on the back of Arthur’s neck. The room was quiet, so quiet that he heard the sound of Arthur’s eyelashes brushing the fabric of the pillowcase as he woke immediately, followed by the whisper of an exhaled breath and a barely audible noise of discomfort and annoyance as his mind became conscious of the position that his body was in.

What happened next was like watching a butterfly emerge, as Arthur drew his arm back from behind the bed, flexing his fingers, followed by the exposed foot shifting back under the sheets. The Englishman let out a low groan as he twisted his hips, his face briefly turning into the pillow as he stretched, the dull clicking of several bones slipping back into place making Alfred grimace. Finally, he rolled onto his side, facing Alfred, his knees drawing up and arms tucked against his chest, and he smiled.

“Good mornin’,” he mumbled indistinctly, holding one hand out for Alfred to take and gently squeeze before he pressed it to his lips. He didn’t resist as he was pulled across into the American’s arms and held against him, every limb loose and still infused with drowsiness. Comfortable, Arthur dozed while his lover ran his fingers soothingly up and down the curve of his spine.

If this was happiness, Alfred thought as he rested his chin lightly atop Arthur’s head, then he never wanted to know anything else.

Psh. I bet Arthur sleeps in those odd positions because Alfred tends to sleep completely sprawled out across any available surface on the bed, including on top of Arthur. He just isn't sharing that info in this fic. XD

I really do like fics where one member of a couple wakes up and simply watches the other sleeping. It just seems so sweet

Good job and I hope to see more of your work soon. ^_^
